Souper Heroes
Our social action committee cooked and delivered homemade soup to congregants who don’t get out much and could use a friendly person delivering some soup. Special thanks to Barbara Lowell, Alan and Judith Mitzner, Doris Meadows, Judy DeMarino, Leah Dwyer, and a very special thanks to our CTI personal Chef Kevin Dall, who ensured our soup tasted amazing.

CTI is rooted in a rich history of social conscience, addressing societal issues without prejudice. In 2017, Rabbi Huberman recognized the Opioid Epidemic’s impact on Jewish Long Islanders and co-founded, with Jane Fox, the North East Recovery Alliance of Long Island, nerali.org. The mission, to embrace the Jewish recovery community by ‘breaking the stigma and starting a conversation.’ And Rabbi Huberman’s commitment, "it’s time to shine the spiritual light of fellowship on this gritty reality and bring it up from the basement into the Kiddush Room.”
In a Pew Research Center survey (2013), among five million American Jews, most regard ‘working for justice and equality’ as a pillar of their Jewish identity. Nerali.org strives to expedite change thru social action, participating with community resources; Nassau County Office of Mental Health, Heroin Prevention Task Force, Drug Alliance for Social Justice.

Coat Drive
The coat drive was successful, providing nearly 50 coats, sweatshirts, gloves, hats, scarves, boots and blankets to children in need. We reached our goal with a coat for every child who showed up at the distribution. Coats were obtained with a donation from CTI’s discretionary fund, plus items from Limud families and local schools. Three local elementary schools participated: Connolly School in Glen Cove, Glen Head Elementary and Sea Cliff Elementary. Thanks to Liz Saccone, Tova Robbins and Leslie Dwyer for their warm hearts.

With inspiration from CTI’s Cantor Gustavo and Educational Director Lisa Aamodt, Hebrew School (Limud) students enjoyed cooking for the Glen Cove Men’s Shelter . They are truly a blessing. So proud of you guys!
Social Action at CTI means not only clothing the naked, feeding the hungry and taking in the homeless. Through our partnerships with community organizations, we focus on determining and dealing with the root causes of poverty and marginalization. Our goal is to fill immediate needs, while simultaneously providing tools that support independence and breaking out of the poverty cycle.

A significant amount of food was delivered from our High Holiday Project Isaiah drive to the Glen Cove and area Interfaith Nutrition Alliance. This food was sorely needed by local residents in need, and was deeply appreciated.

On the recent CTI Israel 2017 Trip to Israel, the group of 30 extended our commitment to Tikkun Olam by working on a farm for Leket Israel, the largest food bank in Israel. The organization sources, collects and redistributes fresh, perishable, quality food, which would otherwise be considered waste, from farms, hotels, military bases and catering halls. This is done in an effort to aid the portion of the country's population that lives below the poverty line.

I am writing to thank you for braving the heat to bring the Tifereth Israel group to volunteer at Leket Israel's fields today. Your group's participation, hard work and enthusiasm resulted in an amazing goo kilos of eggplant, helping to feed well over 300 families!

$90 to Clothe a Child
CTI Social Action, in partnership with Glen Cove Rotary, is involved in a project to clothe children in need in our community for winter.
Each year, Rotary fills two buses of children, and takes them to a department store, where a winter coat, gloves, a hat and other essentials are purchased.
If you are interested in clothing a local child, please contact the Rabbi, or send a check for $90 to CTI c/o the Rabbi's Discretionary Fund.
We hope to help Rotary, while providing warm clothing for children in need. Please contact us if you would like to help, or would like further information.

Support for Haiti - CTI established reliable contacts with families in the hurricane-devastated Haitian communities of Au Caye and Jeremie. These families lost their homes and possessions. A "barrel" of clothing was sent to Haiti. Additionally, designated donations made to the Rabbi's Discretionary Fund were forwarded to those directly affected.
We received these photos from Jeremie, Haiti, where clothing and supplies contributed by CTI and other donors arrived to assist residents who lost their homes and possessions during the recent hurricane. Residents asked that we share these photos with you -- along with a heartfelt, "Merci."
Support of Local Families- CTI supports three families in need. Donations of "gift cards" can be made to the CTI Social Action Fund. The contributions enable these families to purchase food and clothing.
Warm Coat Drive- CTI is part of a region-wide initiative to distribute food and coats to local residents in need. We need winter coats, which can be dropped off at the synagogue during business hours.
